Modernising a publishing brand while honouring its legacy

Nutmeg Books (formerly Nutmeg Publishing) is a local independent publisher and online distributor specialising in Malaysian history and culture, with roots dating back to 2008. Over the years, as more publishers and bookstores focusing on historical topics began to emerge, Nutmeg Books felt overshadowed by newer, more contemporary players. This prompted a refreshed visual identity that modernises their presence while still honouring their long-standing heritage in historical publications.
Logo concepts
The logo was reworked into a simpler, modernised version. We agreed on a minimalist direction while preserving its original nutmeg identity.
[1] Simplifying the illustration of the nutmeg: the finalised version felt more in tune with the original nutmeg image and looked more like a nutmeg compared to others.
[2] Changing the font: the original Cooper Black did not feel professional or sleek. Hence, Poppins was chosen to reflect just that.
The minimalist nutmeg
The brand colour palette is meant to reflect the primary colours of a nutmeg which are red and yellow. Since Nutmeg Books is striving for a more modern and professional look, a simple sans serif font was suitable for the logo, directing more focus towards the nutmeg illustration.
Building brand presence
Beyond its core visuals, the brand needed to exist in spaces people naturally encounter. Business cards help share the brand in person, while social media profiles and the website allow audiences to explore it digitally. Together, these applications build recognition and familiarity across both physical and online spaces.
The website: a digital home
The website acts as a digital home for Nutmeg Books, where the brand’s visual language, catalogue, and story come together. While the site prioritises clear navigation and usability, it also emphasises on communicating the brand’s identity, allowing visitors to engage with Nutmeg Books, beyond individual book titles.
